4 Hotels with Grand Experiences That Are Not the Grand (Hotel)

So, you’ve made it across the ferry… where did you go first? Did you savor the decadent peanut brittle and fudge offerings? Did you perhaps take a carriage ride from Mackinac Island Carriage Tours with your entourage to get your #PureMackinac in right away, or did check into your hotel and get settled in with a book?

Everyone more than likely knows about the magic of the Grand Hotel, but before you confirm your reservation, perhaps consider one of these four hotel properties to rest your head on Mackinac Island.

1. Mackinac House

New to Mackinac Island this 2019 season, The Mackinac House offers a fresh view of island life. You might even recognize the some of the names and faces of this new project because they are in fact the inn keepers from the Cottage Inn. You can tell that this project was a labor of love (just imagine trying to build something from scratch on an island!) for this incredibly hospitable team. The new Mackinac House features countless perks, but one of them that we just love is the prime location on the quieter Market Street. There's a large front porch perfect for watching the horses go by and the rooms are adorned with walk in showers. We really dig the color palette of the rooms, replete with rich oranges, blues, and the perfect hue of pink. Go here to learn more about the guest rooms. Taking reservations now with dates starting and after August 1, 2019, so make sure to plan ahead and reserve your spot.

2. The Island House Hotel

The island’s oldest hotel offers beautiful scenic views of the glistening Lake Huron’s waterfront and the nostalgic vibes emanating off of the downtown city lights. Take a dip in the heated indoor pool or soak in the outdoor hot tubs, maybe even rent a bike out and explore the many sights and adventures you’ll find throughout your journey.

Head over to the one of their two onsite restaurants after a long day of exploring the island. 1852 Grill Room offers a wide selection of wine and cuisines to measure out the perfect evening, classical pianist and all. If you’re looking for a more casual vibe, walk on over to the Ice House BBQ, a local favorite where you can have the best of both worlds: sip a cocktail indoors or feast on the garden patio. Try the onion rings and some ribs, they bring the goods.

Enjoy complimentary baggage handling, discounted ferry tickets, evening bonfires and to make your Mackinac experience a most memorable one.

3. Harbour View Inn

With four exceptional buildings all in one location, guests are taken on a trip to both historic French and Victorian styled décor. Let yourself be whisked away by the sights of these immaculately kept buildings, the beautifully manicured courtyard, and the stunning harbor. The property is flush with lush landscaping featuring some of the island’s iconic lilac trees and perfectly manicured lawns. Make sure to nab one of the coveted Harbour View rooms which features a shared private balcony, perfect for sipping away at a glass of champagne (which you can get at island grocery store Doud’s Market).Your perfect getaway awaits you.

4. Lake View Hotel

As you find yourself arriving to the island via ferry, you’ll spot your home for the week in the Lake View Hotel. Towering high over the rooftops of other buildings, the gleaming white shingles and tiered covered porches are your welcoming call to a weekend of paradise and relaxation. The Lake View Hotel features 85 guest rooms including the Standard, Deluxe, Spa, Lake View, Turret and Presidential suite perfect for any occasion.

Take advantage of the hotel’s three restaurants…, yes three restaurantsGoodfellow’s Italian Chop House takes guests through its diverse Italian menu in a Tuscan inspired dining hall. From the salads to the larger scampi and Marsala plates, you’ll definitely find yourself saving room for dessert. Goodfellow’s Wings and Things will serve you anything from wings itself to burgers, pizza, prime steaks, seafood and classic Italian pasta dishes. It’s your essential one-stop shop to make everyone in your party happy. Sticking to the theme, Goodfellow’s Wine Cellar treats you to the best of the best “wine experience” on the island with an exclusive dinner menu with accommodating wine pairings… and the only retail wine shop on the island.
